Local SEO in Mexico: How to Show Up on Google Maps and in “Near Me” Searches

If your customers are in your city, Google Maps matters as much as your website. How to work on both.

When someone searches for “dentist in Monterrey” or “accountant near me”, Google first shows a map with three or four businesses. Being there can bring in more customers than any ad. That area depends largely on your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) and on how it relates to your website.

1. Claim and verify your Business Profile

Find your business on Google Maps or go to business.google.com. Verify it (by phone call, text message or video, depending on your case). Without verification you can't manage it or rank well.

2. Complete the whole profile

  • A precise primary category (it's the strongest relevance factor) and secondary categories.
  • Accurate opening hours, including public holidays.
  • A clear description of what you do, without repeating keywords pointlessly.
  • Services or products with descriptions.
  • Your own photos: storefront, team, finished work. Real photographs build trust.
  • A link to your website and your phone number.

If you serve customers at their home and don't receive visitors at your address, set up a service-area business and hide your address.

3. Keep your details identical everywhere

Name, address and phone number should match letter for letter on your site, your Google profile, Facebook, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places and any directories you use. Inconsistencies confuse search engines.

4. Earn reviews legitimately

  • Ask real customers for reviews, with a direct link to your profile.
  • Reply to all of them, including the negative ones, calmly and with solutions.
  • Don't buy reviews or offer payment in exchange: it goes against Google's policies and can get your profile suspended.

5. Prepare your website for local

  • A contact page with the address, map, opening hours and phone number as text (not just in an image).
  • Natural mentions of your city and neighborhoods in titles, headings and copy where they genuinely make sense.
  • One page per service, and one per city only if you really serve it and have distinct, useful content; near-identical pages hurt.
  • LocalBusiness structured data (or the appropriate subtype) with name, address, phone and opening hours.
  • Mobile speed: almost all local searches are made from a phone.

6. Post and keep it updated

Profile posts (offers, news, completed work) and new photos show activity. It's not a magic ranking trick, but it keeps the profile alive and useful for whoever sees it.

7. Measure

  • In your Google profile: calls, direction requests, website clicks and the searches you appeared for.
  • On your site: use links with UTM parameters from the profile to tell those visits apart in Analytics.
  • In Search Console: queries that include your city.
